Create your own unique marquee layouts

I have asked Spencer King from DIY Marquees to give consumers useful advice when purchasing a marquee.DIY Marquees

Pop up Marquees are a very clever invention but although all of the different designs use a similar folding mechanism the quality of the structures vary greatly. The quality of any pop up marquee comes from the quality of the frame, the quality of the covers and the build quality. At DIY Marquees we only sell the heaviest duty design of pop up marquee. This is designed for marquee hire businesses or those wanting a more reliable and durable structure than available elsewhere.

When wishing to buy party tent also consider what accessories you may need – tie downs and flooring are often required but interior linings and marquee lighting turn the party tent in to a far more impressive venue.

Marquee lighting takes many forms but the most popular are festoon lighting or marquee chandeliers all operated on a dimmer system for ease of use. You may not require accessories when originally buying the party tent but knowing that a wide range of accessories and spare parts are available gives you greater future proofing on your investment.

Need help buying a marquee?

DIY Marquees

DIY Marquees offer the largest range of heavy duty party tents and marquees to buy from stock in the UK. 24 different sizes in various different ranges means there is the ideal marquee for you – whether you are looking for some temporary party tents to put up at home or a heavy duty marquee for commercial hiring.

When looking for heavy duty party tents or marquees to buy it is important to look at many factors. Many suppliers will list the thickness of covers used as a sign of quality when in fact quality of build is far more important and even the weight of material is misleading as there are a wide range of qualities within the same weight category of PVC and PE covers used in party tents and marquees to buy.

the diy party tent range

Have a careful look at the features of the structures in question and this will also give an indication to the build quality – a marquee that includes additional bracing (eave braces, gable uprights etc) will not cut corners elsewhere in the build quality. A marquee or heavy duty party tent that has cut corners by having the Georgian window printed on rather than the more time-consuming rounded cut may well have cut corners elsewhere that will only come to light when the marquees or party tents are in use.

Buying a marquee and not sure where to start?

Historically the marquee industry consisted of very large marquees used by commercial marquee hire companies, heavy duty party tents and small gazebos from garden centres, whilst these are still available now there are so many options between the two extremes. Increasingly popular are small marquees for sale, party tents structures that are heavier duty than the lightweight gazebos but smaller than the large marquees bought by commercial companies.

Small marquees for sale are by their nature easy to erect but still highly durable and able to withstand nearly anything the British weather can throw at them.

Marquee companies for sale happen very rarely, both sales and hire companies are usually long-term business ventures and so come up for sale very rarely. Due to the variety of different marquee qualities marquee hire companies for sale often only appeal to similar companies using similar ranges but not covering the same area so the potential buyers are limited. Marquee companies for sale that actually sell marquees are even rarer and therefore attract a greater premium than otherwise would.

If you’re looking for a marquee for sale then look no further than DIY Marquees. We offer a variety of different ranges and models meaning we have a marquee for sale to suit any budget. Whether it’s a sit down formal wedding marquee or a party tent marquee on a patio we have the marquee to suit.

Buying a marquee is serious business, speak to the UK experts

When hiring out marquees it is good practice to have some discrete marquee branding. Keep in mind that any branding shouldn’t be over the top or take up too much of the available face, you do not want your marquee to appear as a billboard. You want your marquee to remain looking clean and elegant whilst guests who wish to find out who supplied the marquee can find out if they want to by having a discrete vinyl marquee branding on one or two side panels or the trim of the roof.

Marquee lighting is not always required – any good quality white marquee will be light inside if it is light outside so for daytime functions lighting in marquees is not always necessary. For evening functions there is a variety of possible marquee lighting options but whatever option you choose -festoons, uplighters or chandeliers, ensure all lighting is dimmer-controlled to help the party atmosphere.

Marquee Flooring always adds to any marquee but be wary of any cheap breathable options. Professional marquee hire companies always put a non-breathable layer down before any type of marquee flooring, this prevents the grass giving off water vapour which then forms as condensation and can ruin a function. All of the marquee flooring packages we offer at DIY Marquees include this non-breathable layer as well as a choice of colour carpet to suit any occasion.

What marquees should I buy? Need help speak to DIY Marquees

DIY Marquees leaders in marquees offer the most informative advice to anyone who wants to purchase a marquee. They really want their clients to achieve and will often give you advice that you do not want to hear, however, this will save you money and time in the long run. Their straight forward approach is what makes them leaders in the marquee industry and a company that strives to put their customers first.

Read what DIY Marquees have to say about starting your own business:

This is a conversation I have regularly, you’re interested in starting a marquee hire business and don’t know where to start. This is what I suggest:

Research
Find out who your local competitors are, what marquees they offer and how much they charge for the sort of marquees you’re likely to offer.
If there are hardly any competitors or the local companies all offer much larger marquees then this is a good thing. There’s space in the market for you to exploit.
If there are a lot of companies in your local area that offer similar size marquees to ours/yours then you might need to think twice about starting up. It’s not impossible but it is much harder to get going in a saturated market.

the diy party tent range

Stock
The most popular marquees for hiring are 6x12m, 6x6m and 4x8m. If you’re based in a city then it’s more likely to be the smaller, 4m wide marquees that are popular.

What marquees should I buy?
I would recommend starting on a smaller scale initially. All of our marquees are designed along a similar, easy to erect style. If you’ve put one up then you won’t have a problem erecting a different size without practice.
Because of the large stock we carry and swift delivery you can just buy more marquees when you have the bookings for them – to me that makes good business sense, you only buy further marquees when you know you’re getting a return on your investment.

when do you need to insure a marquee?
If you’re hiring out marquees then you should be covered for public liability insurance. When you buy a DIY Marquee we pass on 3 companies details who specialise in marquee hire cover. We also pass on a copy of the terms and conditions of hire we used to use as a hire company and we can provide some photos to get your website and advertising started.

We always enjoy helping people start up their own marquee hire businesses and will happily chat through any ideas you may have. The above is just a collection of ideas to start you off.

Read some excellent advice from DIY Marquees

DIY Marquees for sale give fantastic advice to ensure their customers’ requirements are taken into consideration and often on a tight budget. They will give the best possible advice ensuring your party or function is a complete success. Whether you would like a garden party, wedding, Christmas party you will be sure to get the help you require. DIY Marquees have some affordable pop up marquees for sale.

Case study: Mr Jones wants to cover as much of his garden with marquees as possible

We recently had a visit by a Mr Jones, he was planning a party and wanted to extend his house in to the garden using marquees. This is a pretty common scenario for marquee hire companies especially during the winter months.

Mr Jones came in with a diagram of his garden with the marquees he thought he need, two 4x6m marquees, one 3.6×3.6m pagoda and one walkway:

Jones01

The garden is not easy as it’s a very funny shape and on the surface this looks to do the job. My concerns were:

  • Weathering to the house would be difficult. The 4x6m marquee against the house should at least be a 6x4m one for ease of weathering. A pagoda is sloped on all 4 sides and so difficult to weather against a house.
  • There would be many joins. This is not a problem regarding weatherproofing with our guttering kits but it can be a hindrance to party atmosphere and circulation. The risk is the end 4x6m marquee would feel cut-off and under-used (note if this layout went ahead a good suggestion would be to put the food and/or drink in this 4x6m to ensure it is used).
  • Walkways are ideal for connecting marquees together but in this scenario you aren’t really gaining any useable space by having the walkway in the middle there. It’s a bit like a sideways corridor.

So having explained all of this I suggested an alternative approach, a 4x12m marquee and a 4x4m marquee on the side:

Jones02

  • This is much easier to weather against the house (both marquees would have their flat gables towards the house)
  • There is only one join and it is much easier to weather the two marquees side by side
  • You have a larger main area for the guests to circulate.

Note that in this example Mr Jones is actually ending up with slightly less of his garden covered and my alternative option is cheaper than his original suggestion. I can however guarantee that this second idea will be an improvement on the atmosphere and circulation of the party.

As mentioned in other articles I would still recommend having the food and drink out in the marquee (maybe at the far end). People (especially blokes) linger by the bar, having the food and drink outside guarantees the marquees are used fully and everyone doesn’t end up in the kitchen.

Lead by example with DIY Marquees

Different styles of management on site with marquees

Different people have different styles of management, most (certainly in the marquee industry) fall in to one of two categories: Leading by example or leading by delegation.

Some will be proficient in both but most people naturally use one or the other and it is well worth learning both how your own management style works and those you work with to prevent conflict.

Leading by example:

In a small group this is a good way of getting the job done. The person in charge sets the pace and does the work and everyone else is there as an assistant. This is how most people in small businesses work, if you’ve ever worked with a self-employed electrician, plumber or similar this is their only way of working.

  • With a small group of people this is often the fastest way of getting the job done
  • The quality of the work will always be high, after all it is the best person/most qualified that would be doing all of the work
  • Everyone has to work at the same pace as the leader which prevents people dragging their heels
  • This does place a lot of work/pressure on the leader who becomes irreplaceable
  • It’s difficult to scale up – a person can only work with so many assistants

Leading by delegation:

This is ideal for larger groups where tasks are delegated to different people. This is obviously how larger businesses work

  • The only way of working with large numbers of people
  • The quality of work can be more varied as you are relying on different peoples finishes
  • You can have different speeds of work which can breed resentment if one team is significantly slower than another

What does this mean in marquee hire? Whether it’s a DIY Party Tent or a Commercial DIY Marquee this can apply.

In my experience small groups are the most efficient way of working, within this small group should be a leader who leads by example (as above) otherwise it all becomes a bit aimless and drags on. The leader is the one who will set the pace, get the job done and maintain the standard.

On larger sites where you need more people the leader needs to be able to split the people and tasks in to smaller groups so they need to lead by delegation and have a leader by example in each smaller group.

Once the frame of a marquee is up you can split people up accordingly – some do the flooring, some do electrics, some could start another marquee if required. It is simply not efficient to have everyone doing the same job, if you have enough potential leaders working in 2’s and 3’s is by far the most effective and efficient way of working on site.

It is never a healthy thing having only one person capable of doing a certain job. If you run a small business and always work in a small group take the time to train those working with you as you work. It means your business will be easier to scale up (your assistant becomes a new leader) and less pressure on your shoulders.

DIY Marquees have a fabulous range of marquees for sale

DIY Marquees have a fabulous range of marquees for sale, the largest ranges in the UK. They are a professional team of people who pride themselves in being the leaders in marquee sales, they will give you advice on Marquee Flooring, décor and size of the marquee. Read some useful information on BUYERS GUIDE when making a decision on what marquee to purchase.

What size of marquee do I need?

When looking to buy a marquee the first thing to do is decide what size(s) of marquee you need, only then can you decide which range of marquee is most suitable for you.

There are several ways of calculating this:

  • Measure your garden. If space is limited your guest list may be restricted by the maximum size of marquee able to fit in the space.
  • If your garden is an awkward size then consider using more than one marquee connected together to cover the space. Multiple marquees can take a little more thought in planning a successful party but please contact us; we’re marquee specialists and are here to help.
  • If you need help in picturing the layout of a marquee then check out our interactive marquee planner and experiment with different layouts.

the classic diy marquee range

The following size guide shows the capacity (seated or standing) or each size of marquee. Size guides can vary greatly; this is due to the variety of ways a marquee can be used. For example a 6x12m marquee can seat 70-80 people at round tables but if you allow for buffet tables and/or a dance floor then the capacity is reduced.

Click on the size marquee you require and you will then be taken to the ranges we offer in that size of marquee.

If you are in any doubt over the size marquee you require please contact us with your requirements and we would be more than happy to put together some sample layouts for you.
