Expert Advice From The Professional in Marquees

DIY Marquees

The rain in Spain (and France) can be a pain

One of the joys of running DIY Marquees is I get to chat to people from geographical areas that I have no experience of. When I ran a marquee hire business the area we covered was as compact as we could make it (for obvious logistical reasons) so it’s great hearing about other people’s experiences especially if it’s something I can share to others on this blog.

It’s fair to say that France and other parts of Europe have had a bit of rain recently. Torrential rain is always a headache in the marquee industry, it’s a pain dealing with wet equipment and a party is always better in the sun than rain.

From a waterproofing point of view rain shouldn’t be an issue however the weakest point will always be a join -this is why nearly all DIY marquees use roofs that are all in one piece. Providing guttering has been fitted correctly and tested then it should cope with all but the most extremes of downfalls.

Something that has been highlighted in discussions with some customers in both France and Spain recently is what about the run off from other buildings? Whilst most houses in the UK have guttering that is often not the case in other parts of Europe or even on outbuildings or barns here in the UK.

If you are putting a marquee up against any building then it is always wise to look at what would happen if it rained – could the water run off the building? If so where will it go? Could it overload a guttering system (theirs or yours)? If you use roofs that come in sections (as I say, our main marquees don’t have this problem) then will this compromise the waterproof integrity of the join?

In relation to how often this situation may arise this is a minor issue, it is however something you as a professional marquee hirer should be aware of, it is much better to learn from our experience or those of our customers rather than make the same mistake yourself.

If in doubt then as always, take some photographs and email them to us – we’ll happily advise as best we can.

Starting a Marquee Hire business?

DIY Marquees are so passionate about the Marquees they sell and the additional services they offer. With so with the many years’ experience in event planning they offer some professional sound advice on all aspects of purchasing a marquee and starting your own marquee company.

the diy party tent range

When wanting to start my own marquee hire business they were by far the most experienced company we dealt with and after we decided to go with their large product range and brilliant after sales service I am pleased to say we now have a successful marquee hire business. If it wasn’t for their assistance from start to finish we would not have exceeded.

Many people assume it’s easy to start a marquee company with the misconception it’s a simple to go and choose the marquees they want to use for hiring out. It’s not as simple as that. There are hundreds of different options and things to think about for example: weather, durability, marquee designs, what size marquee do I need? Etc. etc.

DIY Marquees have a fantastic blog whereby they share ideas and marquee planning advice.

I found this informative article on Marquee Heating, these are all things to think about and DIY Marquee will make sure they are covered.

During Spring and summer months heating is generally only required to take the chill off later in the evening. During autumn and especially winter you should heat the marquee for a reasonable time before guests arrive to ensure a successful event.

Do:

Use a heater with a powerful fan

Test the heating several days before the event (at the same time of day) to make sure it works and is sufficient for the space

In the winter have the heating on for at least an hour before people arrive. On arrival guests should walk in to a wall of warmth, if they walk in to a cold marquee they will not warm up for the whole function

If possible use several smaller heaters rather than one large one to create a consistent temperature in your marquee

Aim one heater towards the entrance, think of a high street shop – they have a heater above the door to ensure the temperature inside stays at a constant level

Don’t:

Use a halogen heater, cabinet heater or any other kind of infra-red heater without a fan. They are not powerful enough for larger marquees

Have anything close to or touching a heater (sounds obvious but still worth mentioning)

DIY Marquees not only sell marquees they also provide lighting, heating and flooring options.

Excellent tips to ensure a successful party

Tips for evening party marquees

Furniture:

  • Unlike marquees furniture is often too expensive to buy so hiring is usually the best solution
  • For a formal atmosphere use larger round tables (5ft for seating 8/9, 5ft6in for seating 10)
  • Use a mixture of smaller tables to create an informal atmosphere (see this article on seating)
  • You can get away with fitting more people in a marquee for a party than for a wedding, a wedding requires more space but you can squeeze people up a bit at parties.
  • A marquee can hold more people standing than seated (generally around 1.5 times the number seated) but it’s always worth having some seats in rows against the sides of a marquee even if you are leaving the middle completely clear for standing (or using it as a dance floor area)
  • For formal seating remember an easel for table plans (or two for larger functions)

Dance Floors:

  • Do you want your party to be mainly about the dancing? In which case put the dance floor in the middle so it is very much the centre of attention. If you want it as an option then put it at one end.
  • Like furniture dance floors can be prohibitively expensive to purchase to hiring or making yourself (18mm plywood screwed to battens and stained) are the most common solutions
  • Alternatively if your marquee is to cover part of a patio or decking area that can be used as a dance floor

Other:

  • Set the marquee up several days in advance and test the lighting and heating (if applicable) at the time of your function just to make sure both are sufficient.
  • People (mainly blokes) will always congregate around the bar. For this reason always position it near the evenings entertainment to avoid having two parties. Always aim to keep everyone in one place to maintain the atmosphere so avoid putting the bar in the house or a separate marquee
  • Always have lighting on a dimmer, this gives you the flexibility to supply lighting to eat by and mood lighting to dance by
  • In October to April you will need to heat the marquee – have the heating on for an hour before people arrive to ensure they walk in to a wall of warmth
  • In May to September you might need a heater just to take the chill off in the seating area later in the evening
  • Think of how your guests will arrive – a simple path of carpet with flower pots makes an attractive and inviting entrance to the marquee
  • Think of how your guests will leave – it’s likely to be dark so some form of lighting will be needed to guide people back to their cars
  • You would normally allow one toilet per 40-50 guests. If you don’t have enough available then consider hiring in a luxury toilet unit
  • Give neighbours plenty of notice especially if you plan on partying until the early hours
  • Notify the police, it may sound extreme but it allows them to give informed responses (such as finishing time) to any complaint rather than come knocking on your door

DIY Marquees professional marquee purchase for any new business

Spencer King from DIY Marquees offers excellent advice for those wanting to set up their own marquee company; be it buying a pop-up marquee or one of the hundreds of different marquee available. DIY Marquees not only offer Marquees they also sell many accessories such as lighting, heating and  flooring.

DIY Marquees

Nearly all professional marquee hire’s use diesel or gas powered heaters. When using one of these to heat a marquee personally I would always put a carbon monoxide tester in the marquee too. They’re cheap, easy to fit and give peace of mind to both you and the customer. Not only that it makes you look (even more) thorough and professional. All fumes from a diesel heater should be kept outside from the chimney but what if the wind blows it straight back towards the marquee?

L B Whites have a very useful heating app that’s worth looking at and illustrates why electric heaters are just not man enough for any serious size marquee.

Inputting a 6x12m commercial (3m apex height) marquee with a rise of 30 degrees C (they do metric, I can’t!) gives a requirement for approx 100,000BTU’s or 30KW of heating. Had we designed our marquees to have a higher apex not only would they be less wind resistant they would also require far more heating – the requirement goes up to 40KW.

The maximum an electric heater can supply is 3KW of heat. If you wanted to heat one of these marquees using electric heaters you would need a whopping 10-13 of them and a very large generator to power them all!

Stick to diesel (indirect) or gas (lbwhite) and fit a carbon monoxide detector.

Experienced expert advice on using marquees

Pop up Marquee are most suitable for those who want a strong shelter that’s quick and easy to erect. Ideal for market stalls or anywhere that needs a temporary shelter quick to put up and take down. A pop up marquee will never be as strong as if you buy party tent or marquee.

POP UP MARQUEE IS EASY TO ERECT

DIY Marquees pop up marquees are as strong as the folding design will allow but when you buy party tents or marquees you are buying a stronger rigid frame and covers who’s main function is to be durable and watertight rather than flexible and shower proof.

Marquee lighting, linings and flooring are all available to purchase separately either at the time of buying your marquee or in the future. If you have bought a DIY Marquee then you can always buy marquee lighting, flooring or linings for it in the future. Indeed spare parts are available for the complete range of DIY Marquees.

DIY Marquees have a large range of commercial marquee for sale, they will give you the best advice in terms of your requirements and what they have on offer. They can advise on lighting, flooring and planning. Their team have many years in the marquee industry and will give you the best advise around.

Contact Spencer the owner of DIY Marquees and he will direct you to the right staff to speak to.

Create your own unique marquee layouts

I have asked Spencer King from DIY Marquees to give consumers useful advice when purchasing a marquee.DIY Marquees

Pop up Marquees are a very clever invention but although all of the different designs use a similar folding mechanism the quality of the structures vary greatly. The quality of any pop up marquee comes from the quality of the frame, the quality of the covers and the build quality. At DIY Marquees we only sell the heaviest duty design of pop up marquee. This is designed for marquee hire businesses or those wanting a more reliable and durable structure than available elsewhere.

the pop-up diy marquee range

When wishing to buy party tent also consider what accessories you may need – tie downs and flooring are often required but interior linings and marquee lighting turn the party tent in to a far more impressive venue.

Marquee lighting takes many forms but the most popular are festoon lighting or marquee chandeliers all operated on a dimmer system for ease of use. You may not require accessories when originally buying the party tent but knowing that a wide range of accessories and spare parts are available gives you greater future proofing on your investment.

Need help buying a marquee?

DIY Marquees

DIY Marquees offer the largest range of heavy duty party tents and marquees to buy from stock in the UK. 24 different sizes in various different ranges means there is the ideal marquee for you – whether you are looking for some temporary party tents to put up at home or a heavy duty marquee for commercial hiring.

When looking for heavy duty party tents or marquees to buy it is important to look at many factors. Many suppliers will list the thickness of covers used as a sign of quality when in fact quality of build is far more important and even the weight of material is misleading as there are a wide range of qualities within the same weight category of PVC and PE covers used in party tents and marquees to buy.

the diy party tent range

Have a careful look at the features of the structures in question and this will also give an indication to the build quality – a marquee that includes additional bracing (eave braces, gable uprights etc) will not cut corners elsewhere in the build quality. A marquee or heavy duty party tent that has cut corners by having the Georgian window printed on rather than the more time-consuming rounded cut may well have cut corners elsewhere that will only come to light when the marquees or party tents are in use.

Buying a marquee and not sure where to start?

Historically the marquee industry consisted of very large marquees used by commercial marquee hire companies, heavy duty party tents and small gazebos from garden centres, whilst these are still available now there are so many options between the two extremes. Increasingly popular are small marquees for sale, party tents structures that are heavier duty than the lightweight gazebos but smaller than the large marquees bought by commercial companies.

Small marquees for sale are by their nature easy to erect but still highly durable and able to withstand nearly anything the British weather can throw at them.

Marquee companies for sale happen very rarely, both sales and hire companies are usually long-term business ventures and so come up for sale very rarely. Due to the variety of different marquee qualities marquee hire companies for sale often only appeal to similar companies using similar ranges but not covering the same area so the potential buyers are limited. Marquee companies for sale that actually sell marquees are even rarer and therefore attract a greater premium than otherwise would.

If you’re looking for a marquee for sale then look no further than DIY Marquees. We offer a variety of different ranges and models meaning we have a marquee for sale to suit any budget. Whether it’s a sit down formal wedding marquee or a party tent marquee on a patio we have the marquee to suit.

Buying a marquee is serious business, speak to the UK experts

When hiring out marquees it is good practice to have some discrete marquee branding. Keep in mind that any branding shouldn’t be over the top or take up too much of the available face, you do not want your marquee to appear as a billboard. You want your marquee to remain looking clean and elegant whilst guests who wish to find out who supplied the marquee can find out if they want to by having a discrete vinyl marquee branding on one or two side panels or the trim of the roof.

Marquee lighting is not always required – any good quality white marquee will be light inside if it is light outside so for daytime functions lighting in marquees is not always necessary. For evening functions there is a variety of possible marquee lighting options but whatever option you choose -festoons, uplighters or chandeliers, ensure all lighting is dimmer-controlled to help the party atmosphere.

Marquee Flooring always adds to any marquee but be wary of any cheap breathable options. Professional marquee hire companies always put a non-breathable layer down before any type of marquee flooring, this prevents the grass giving off water vapour which then forms as condensation and can ruin a function. All of the marquee flooring packages we offer at DIY Marquees include this non-breathable layer as well as a choice of colour carpet to suit any occasion.

What marquees should I buy? Need help speak to DIY Marquees

DIY Marquees leaders in marquees offer the most informative advice to anyone who wants to purchase a marquee. They really want their clients to achieve and will often give you advice that you do not want to hear, however, this will save you money and time in the long run. Their straight forward approach is what makes them leaders in the marquee industry and a company that strives to put their customers first.

Read what DIY Marquees have to say about starting your own business:

This is a conversation I have regularly, you’re interested in starting a marquee hire business and don’t know where to start. This is what I suggest:

Research
Find out who your local competitors are, what marquees they offer and how much they charge for the sort of marquees you’re likely to offer.
If there are hardly any competitors or the local companies all offer much larger marquees then this is a good thing. There’s space in the market for you to exploit.
If there are a lot of companies in your local area that offer similar size marquees to ours/yours then you might need to think twice about starting up. It’s not impossible but it is much harder to get going in a saturated market.

the diy party tent range

Stock
The most popular marquees for hiring are 6x12m, 6x6m and 4x8m. If you’re based in a city then it’s more likely to be the smaller, 4m wide marquees that are popular.

What marquees should I buy?
I would recommend starting on a smaller scale initially. All of our marquees are designed along a similar, easy to erect style. If you’ve put one up then you won’t have a problem erecting a different size without practice.
Because of the large stock we carry and swift delivery you can just buy more marquees when you have the bookings for them – to me that makes good business sense, you only buy further marquees when you know you’re getting a return on your investment.

when do you need to insure a marquee?
If you’re hiring out marquees then you should be covered for public liability insurance. When you buy a DIY Marquee we pass on 3 companies details who specialise in marquee hire cover. We also pass on a copy of the terms and conditions of hire we used to use as a hire company and we can provide some photos to get your website and advertising started.

We always enjoy helping people start up their own marquee hire businesses and will happily chat through any ideas you may have. The above is just a collection of ideas to start you off.
